The travel writer John Berendt, in his novel, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, wrote of a character whose epitaph reads
“Cosmic Mariner – Destination Unknown”
(the character was/is based on a real person – Conrad Potter Aiken).
I fell in love with that phrase, the instant I read it. The imagery so eloquently summarising what I have come to know, through a lifelong passion of Astronomy (that we live on a rock which is in perpetual embrace with a star, and are hurtling through the cosmic back waters of the Milky Way galaxy; and my knowledge that none of us know our ultimate fate).
